Culturally Prescribed Lens

Hello!

I am writing this culture blog as part of my Anthropology 101 class. I am a female, 18 years old and a freshman at UAB. I am a now a double major in chemistry and anthropology. I am a member of the Global and Community Leadership Program and have a genuine interest in learning more about people different than myself. This interest did not come by accident.

I grew up in a very small town with no stoplights, attended a k-12 school with about 800 students, and lead a very typical life up until a crucial point in my life. When I was 14 I traveled to the Dominican Republic with my father who would perform free surgery as part of medical missions. I would travel into the schools, orphanages, and churches and take the children clothing, toys, and other basic supplies. I have since visited four times. These trips have drastically changed my view on life.

I am the youngest of 7 children coming from a very blended family. I truly believe that a family is more than just being related by blood. Family is a large part of my life. I am currently in an interracial relationship and have been for four years. Tolerance for people of all shape, size, and color, is something that I believe each human being is due.

I am interested in attending graduate school for public health. Having family members who are unable to afford adequate health care and medicines has inspired me to change the way our country approaches health care.

This is just a peek into what has shaped my view on life. I look forward to attending events that allow me to peek into and understand the lives of others.
